The differences between raw and pasteurized honey are substantial. Raw honey is an alkaline-forming food that contains natural vitamins, enzymes, powerful antioxidants and other important natural nutrients. These are the very nutrients that are destroyed during the heating and pasteurization process. In fact, pasteurized honey is equivalent to and just as unhealthy as eating refined sugar.

Raw honey has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties.

It promotes body and digestive health, is a powerful antioxidant, strengthens the immune system, eliminates allergies, and is an excellent remedy for skin wounds and all types of infections.

Raw honey’s benefits don’t stop there.

Raw honey can also stabilize blood pressure, balance sugar levels, relieve pain, calm nerves, and it has been used to treat ulcers.

Raw honey is also an expectorant and anti-inflammatory and has been known to effectively treat respiratory conditions such as bronchitis and asthma.

Raw honey purchased from a local source is an excellent way of treating seasonal allergies.

Local honey is preferred for treating allergies because the likelihood is great that it will contain small amounts of the specific pollens an individual may be allergic to.

Article from the National Honey Board

Honey has been used for centuries to help alleviate some of the symptoms associated with a common cold. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, many things can cause a sore throat. These include infections with viruses, such as colds and flu; sinus drainage; allergies; or cigarette smoking, among others. Sore throats caused by bacteria such as streptococci, are usually treated with antibiotics. Always check with your doctor if you have a fever, or if symptoms continue for more than a few days.

Time is the most important healer of sore throats caused by viruses, but for relief of the irritating symptoms, try a spoonful of honey to soothe and coat your throat. Take a spoonful straight, as often as you need, to relieve the irritation. In between, keep up your liquids with a steaming cup of tea sweetened with honey. For added vitamin C, try mixing in orange, grapefruit or lemon juice. Follow this link for a Honey-Citrus Soother recipe.

A 2007 study by a Penn State College of Medicine research team found that honey may offer parents an effective and safe alternative to over-the-counter cough medicine. The study found that a small dose of buckwheat honey given before bedtime provided better relief of nighttime cough and sleep difficulty in children than no treatment or dextromethorphan (DM), a cough suppressant found in many over-the-counter cold medications.

The National Honey Board Clarifies

Confusion Over Pollen and

Ultrafiltration

Firestone, Colo. – August 7, 2012 – Honey has been in the news recently, covering topics from its source to its authenticity. The National Honey Board (NHB), a federal research and promotion board with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) oversight, wants to clarify any misconceptions. The NHB utilized industry, culinary and educational resources to produce “The Story of Honey,” which captures the many positives of honey, from being a vital component of a healthy ecosystem to whole body benefits, while shining light on how honey is harvested, from honey bee to table.

“Lately, there has been some confusion about honey and honey filtration,” said Bruce Boynton, CEO of the National Honey Board. “The term “ultrafiltration” has been misused in association with traditional filtration methods commonly used by many U.S. honey packers, leading some consumers to believe that any honey without pollen is not real honey.” “The truth is that honey is made by honey bees from the nectar of flowers and plants, not pollen. “

This is one of several myths that need clarification, according to the NHB. Harvesting honey is an ancient artisanal craft that is both an art and science. The honey bees gather nectar from flowering plants while beekeepers collect honey from the beehives. The journey from harvesting to distributing honey is multifaceted.

“The bees simply collect nectar, add a few enzymes and store it in the honeycomb. But all of the color, the flavor, the aroma, the antioxidants, whatever constituents are in the honey comes from the particular flower from which the nectar was collected,” said 40-year veteran beekeeper Gene Brandi.

There are more than 300 varietals of honey, ranging greatly in flavor and appearance. After the honey is removed from the beehive and extracted by a beekeeper, it is shipped off to a honey packer, who warms the honey and removes any foreign material or residue from the beehive, often including whatever pollens may have been introduced during the extraction process.

“The filtration process that we use is a tried and true method that’s been used in the industry for more than 50 years,” said Jill Clark, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Dutch Gold Honey, a 66-year-old family owned and operated business based in Lancaster, Pa. “We warm the honey so it flows smoothly through our filters. Our filter press looks like a large accordion with many paper filters along the way. Honey goes through the paper filters, and this removes the foreign material or the pollen and any residue from the beehive, so that by the time it’s through the filter papers, the honey is clear and ready for bottling.”

Honey is a natural product that contains just one ingredient: honey. The benefits of honey make it easily accessible for consumers to use in their daily lives. Honey is a whole food that has naturally occurring nutrients. Honey has other uses outside of the culinary realm. As a carbohydrate, honey is a natural energy booster. With humectant properties, honey draws and retains moisture to nourish the body. It is also recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization as a natural cough suppressant in children after the age of one.1

Dr. Ian Paul was the lead researcher of a study funded by the National Honey Board to prove honey is an effective natural cough suppressant. “I was looking to find an alternative that would be just as good as the over-the-counter dextromethorphan. I was surprised when we looked at the study results that the honey did the best in the comparison of the honey, the dextromethorphan and no treatment. So I was really happy to be able to provide an alternative for my patients and children around the country,” said Dr. Ian Paul of Hershey, PA.

The National Honey Board conducts research, advertising and promotion programs to help maintain and expand markets for honey and honey producers. These programs are funded by an assessment of one cent per pound on domestic and imported honey.

In SE Michiganthe Basswood honey flow is the biggest honey flow of the year. But this year it might be different. With hardly any rain, the trees might be to dry to produce Nectar. I have been watching the sweet clover and I do not see any bees working it, which means there is no Nectar in the flowers.

The unusually hot beginning to spring with frost and cold after words left us without the fruit bloom or the Black Locust tree bloom. Without some rain the pickings are going to be slim.

I have been getting many requests for queens. Looks like another season of poor queens. Many of the queens I purchased took 2 weeks before they started laying! ? I tried to order my queens in December and my normal suppliers were already sold out until mid May. Take my advice order early the good queen breeders sell out quick.

Bobilin Honey is going to raise some queens starting mid next month. Stay tuned for availability.

Next Bee Boot Camp is July 14. Same Time, Same Place!

To do this effectively, we need beekeepers, lots of beekeepers, to participate in our survey. We are asking you to please participate in two surveys. Both surveys are open only from 30 March through 20 April 2012.

You can learn more about the Bee Informed Partnership at beeinformed.org.

In advance, thank you for your participation.

National Winter Loss and Management Survey ( http://participate.beeinformed.org/Surveys/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=76KI4p3 ).The winter loss survey should take less than 5 minutes and the management survey should take less than 20 minutes.

The purpose of the Bee Informed Partnership is to use beekeepers’ real world experiences to help solve beekeepers’ real world problems. We will use the data generated from these two surveys to help you decide which management practices are best for beekeepers like you, who live where you do and have operations similar to yours. For this to work, we need as many participants as possible…so please take the time to fill out the questionnaire and SEND THIS EMAIL TO ALL THE BEEKEEPERS YOU KNOW asking them to fill out these questionnaires too.

You can see what type of results we will generate by visiting the Beeinformed.org website and browsing through our results section. Currently we are in the process of posting last year’s management results, so visit the site often to see these results as they are posted and discussed in our BLOG section.

Depending on the number of participants we hope to have the results from this year’s survey broken down by region and should have those results posted within months of the survey close date now that we have built the infrastructure needed to automate report generation.

Should you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us at askbeeinformed@gmail.com or call us at 443.296.2470.

You can learn more about the Bee Informed Partnership at beeinformed.org.

BE INVOLVED, BE INCLUDED, BEE INFORMED.

Thank you,

Early summer temps can drive Beekeepers crazy & Awesome video

Paid advertisment: I still have Nucs available

All the Beekeepers might know this but everyone else might be interested in what is going on with the beekeepers and this crazy weather.

Early warm temperatures have the hives bursting with bees!

Have not written a newsletter lately and here is why. We have been going through all the hives changing them all over to 9 frame supers, adding new foundation and checker boarding them to keep the bees from swarming. We usually do this starting 2nd or 3rd week of April. The amount of bees in the hives is what is usually found in July at the peak of the season. Well we just finished doing the hive work April 1st and I get the calls “the Apples are ready to bloom where are my bees” so we had to pack up the bees and move them into the orchards. We usually don’t move into the orchards until May 1st. The timing is now all messed up and it’s hard to figure out what is next. We should be splitting 80 hives but the queens are not coming until April 26. When we get done splitting, these 80 hives will be around 200 which is another problem. There is not enough equipment for this big of an increase.
Now here is the real dilemma. With all the early trees blooming will there be a honey dearth at the end of April and into May and the bees starve to death. Will the hives become stressed and give the hive beetles a chance to lay eggs and destroy the hive. What if??, What if??, What if?? This is what keeps a Beekeeper up nights and the more bees you have the more sleep we loose.

Here is a link to an awesome 9 minute video about pollinators. Pay attention to the Hummingbird and bat.

Crystallized Honey is still good

Many people think crystallized honey is no good. This is far from the truth. All good honey will crystallize with a few exceptions. I define good honey as any honey that is not over heated during the extracting or bottling process.

DO NOT ADD WATER TO YOUR HONEY!!!! WATER IS THE ONLY THINK THAT CAN CAUSE HONEY TO SPOIL!!!!!

If your honey is crystallized there are several ways to liquefy it.
1) If you have a warm day put it on your car dashboard. Depending on the amount in the container 2-3 hours and it will be just like the day it was bought.
2) Put in hot tap water until it liquefies. DO NOT BOIL IT!!
3) Put it in the microwave for 15-20 seconds let it set 2-3 minutes, shake it then repeat. If there is a small amount of honey put in the microwave for 10-15 seconds. Do this until it gets liquid. Do not try to get it clear like when it was purchased you will over heat it and ruin the honey. Just get it liquid and do not worry about the crystals still floating.

Is this honey local?
That I know of there is no definition for local honey.
Everyone is looking for local honey because of the benefits for allergies and such. I would define local as honey from an area that contains the same plants, trees etc. 10, 20 or even 30 miles would fall into this category. The more important question that should be asked is. Is this honey RAW? If the honey is not raw it could be from next door and would do you no good.

What is RAW HONEY??

That I know of there is no official definition for raw honey. This is what is most people consider what is RAW HONEY.

The myths
1) The more bee parts and wax floating on top the better. Common sense will tell you this is BS. I can ground up some bees and wax, put it on top and double the price.
2) The honey has to bee crystallized to bee raw. Again BS. Within 4-8 weeks all my honey is crystallized in the buckets. So I can put it in a container wait 4-8 weeks and double the price.

The facts
1) RAW Honey contains all the good stuff that the bees put in, Pollen, enzymes, wild yeast, and other compounds.
2) If honey is heated too high everything that makes honey, honey is killed. 150 degrees kills everything.
3) The majority of the honey in the big Grocery stores is heated to above150 degrees.
4) If you heat the honey and kill the wild yeast you can add water.
5) The heating also keeps the honey from crystallizing as fast adding to shelf life. If honey crystallizes on the store shelf they throw it out.
6) You do not know were the honey has come from and what chemicals that could be in it. Honey from other countries has been dumped down the drain by the FDA due to chemicals that were found in the honey. Some of them considered carcinogens (cancer causing). Not every barrel of honey is checked when it comes into the USA.
7) If the beekeeper treats with chemicals while having the honey boxes on, the honey will contain those compounds,
http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2011/08/honey-laundering/
http://www.mnn.com/food/healthy-eating/stories/honey-laundering-fradulent-and-tainted-honey-and-how-to-avoid-it

8) If you don’t know the Beekeeper you don’t know the honey.

9) My honey is not heated over 110 degrees usually 100 degrees to liquefy it so it can be bottled.
10) The bee parts and wax is filtered out leaving all the good stuff and no yucky stuff.
11) The only 100% guarantee for RAW HONEY is COMB honey. There can be no processing, heating etc in comb honey. What you see is what you get.
